Donations

Donations are welcome! They may be to the General Fund, which makes possible and furthers the work of the organization, or to one of several Research Funds: The Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education, the OSBA Research Fund, the fund administered by the Agricultural Research Foundation at Oregon State University, and the Herman A. Scullen Fellowship Fund.

OSBA General Fund

The OSBA General Fund covers all expenses of the association excepting donations to research, although there is no stipulation against providing research funding as well. Among the expenses thus covered are conference expenses apart from conference registrations, publication of the association’s newsletter and website, participation in the Oregon State Fair and other events, a storage unit, insurance, annual filing fee with the State of Oregon, accountant fees, treasurer office expenses, contribution to the American Beekeeping Federation, and qualified incidental expenses from such areas as the Oregon Master Beekeeper Program, Oregon Bee Project, Commercial Beekeeper Workshop, and so forth.

To donate to the OSBA General Fund, you can either

a. Donate online through PayPal with a PayPal account or by credit card/debit card:

or

b. Donate by check or money order. If choosing this option, it is important to:

❖ Make out a check to the Oregon State Beekeepers Association

❖ On the memo line, write “General Fund”

❖ Mail to: OSBA Treasurer

To Make a Donation to an Apiculture Fund for Research

The Oregon State Beekeepers Association is involved along four separate avenues of supporting apiculture:

1. The Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education, which is for long-term support of the Oregon State University apiculture program.

2. The OSBA Research Fund, which supports research in the region and is distributed by the OSBA Board.

3. The fund administered by the Agricultural Research Foundation at Oregon State University, which provides funds for the immediate use of the OSU apiculture program, currently headed by Dr. Ramesh Sagili.

4. The Herman A. Scullen Fellowship Fund, which is intended to support a graduate student pursuing a career in apiculture.

The procedure for donating to each of these four funds is described in the paragraphs that follow.

1. Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education

The Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education functions as a long-term investment in the apiculture program at Oregon State University. The Oregon State Beekeepers Association established this fund at the OSU Foundation in 2007 in order to encourage donations to a fund that would allow the hiring of a honey bee entomologist in perpetuity. The endowment is written in such a way as to allow for expenditure of the accumulating interest on research until such time that there might be a large enough principal so that the interest is sufficient to pay the salary of a honey bee entomologist. At present, the principal required to endow permanently a chair in apiculture is two million dollars. For those interested in donating to the OSBA Endowment Fund, you donate by check or money order. It is important to:

❖ Make it out to The OSU Foundation

❖ Write on the memo line: “Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education”

❖ Write a cover letter explaining your donation and repeating the name of the fund you wrote on the memo line

❖ Mail to: The OSU Foundation, 4238 SW Research Way, Corvallis OR 97333

Making out a check with the memo line as described will ensure that it goes to the desired endowment fund and not to the Foundation’s general fund.

There is an additional Fund at Oregon State University, established a year after OSBA established the Endowment Fund, called the OSU Apiculture Endowment. A critical difference between the OSU Apiculture Endowment and the Endowment Fund established by OSBA (the Northwest Apiculture Fund for Honey Bee Research, Extension, and Education) is that the language that stipulates that the fund be used solely for the support of an apiculture program. The OSU Apiculture Endowment allows for expenditure on “any other uses most similar to the original intent,” if for some reason an apiculture program might become impossible or impractical in the future. Another important difference between the two is that, in the OSBA Endowment Fund, a Review Committee that includes OSU faculty and three beekeepers will direct disbursements from the fund, whereas in the OSU Apiculture Endowment, no such committee is specified. Donating to the fund established by the OSBA, therefore, ensures that the gift will be utilized only in a program dedicated to the honey bee and the beekeeping industry. In fact, the OSBA Executive Board and the OSBA membership voted to proceed with establishing an endowment fund only if the language of the agreement included these terms.

2. OSBA Research Fund

The OSBA Research Fund is an option for donating to the support of research generally. Those of us who purchase something donated to the auction at the OSBA fall conference are doing this, as several years ago the membership voted that all proceeds from the auction be dedicated to research. These funds go directly into the Research Fund and are then distributed each year to various programs for research.

To donate to the OSBA Research Fund, you can either

a. Donate online through PayPal with a PayPal account or by credit card/debit card:

or

b. Donate by check or money order. If choosing this option, it is important to:

❖ Make out a check to the Oregon State Beekeepers Association

❖ On the memo line, write “Research Fund”

❖ Mail to: OSBA Treasurer

3. Agricultural Research Foundation

The Agricultural Research Foundation at Oregon State University is available for donating directly to the support of Dr. Ramesh Sagili’s research. To make a direct donation:

❖ Make out a check to the Agricultural Research Foundation

❖ On the memo line, write either “Dr. Ramesh Sagili’s Program” or “Honey Bee Program”

❖ Include a cover letter reiterating that the donation is for support of the Honey Bee Program

❖ Mail to: Agricultural Research Foundation, 1600 SW Western Blvd, Ste 320, Oregon State University, Corvallis OR 97333

Make sure to indicate that the donation is for Dr. Sagili as described to ensure that the Agricultural Research Foundation directs the funds as intended. Dr. Sagili has immediate access to these funds, and the Agricultural Research Foundation charges no fee to act as intermediary.

4. Herman A. Scullen Memorial Fellowship Fund

The Herman A. Scullen Memorial Fellowship Fund is named for the man who was OSU’s honey bee entomologist for some thirty-four years, until his retirement in 1953. It was established around 1981 by a bequest of Professor Scullen’s wife and aims to support a graduate student at OSU who is pursuing a path toward a career in apiculture.

The Review Committee for this fund is chaired by John Lambrinos and includes three beekeepers from OSBA—Jan Lohman, Lynn Royce, and Harry Vanderpool. You may donate to the Scullen Memorial Fellowship by check or money order. It is important to:

❖ Make it out to The OSU Foundation

❖ Write “Herman A. Scullen Memorial Fellowship” on the memo line

❖ Include a cover letter to the Foundation noting your desire to donate to the Scullen Fund

❖ Mail to: The OSU Foundation, 4238 SW Research Way, Corvallis OR 97333

Again, take care in identifying the fund to the donation is made on the memo line.
