First Presentation: “The business of commercial queen production and shipping of queens”, by Ted Miksa, Florida queen producer.
Bio: Ted Miksa is a 3rd generation beekeeper in Groveland, Florida. Although initially migratory, with grandfather from Pennsylvania and then with father to Wisconsin for honey production, the family business since 1997 has concentrated solely on queen production. He supplies queens in bulk to many producers in the lower 48 states. Ted is also chairman of the Florida Honey Bee Technical Council and a Board member of the American Honey Producers Association and was recently interviewed on Univ of Florida’s Two bees in a Podcast Sept 2023, Episode 147.
Second Presentation: “Queen Rearing for the Small-scale Beekeeper”, by Dr. Larry Connor, author, bee educator, and owner of Wicwas Press.
Bio: Michigan native Lawrence John Connor completed his Ph.D. (on strawberry pollination) at Michigan State. He was extension apicultural entomologist at The Ohio State University in Columbus. He left the Midwest to manage the Dadant Starline and Midnite Hybrid queen program, the world’s first mass production facility for instrumentally inseminated queen honey bees. Afterwards he moved to Connecticut where he established the Beekeeping Education Service, offering educational programs for beekeepers and later he purchased Wicwas Press (www.wicwas.com) from Dr. Roger and Mary Lou Morse. He has written and publishes a series of Essential beekeeping books and a diverse array of titles by other authors dealing with bees, beekeeping, queen rearing and pollination.
He has traveled and lectured on bees and beekeeping in all states and many Canadian provinces. He has also lectured in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, the Czech Republic and Thailand.
