About Honey Bee Swarms

honey bee swarmA swarm is a cluster of bees that are out in the open hanging from a branch or on another object—as opposed to being inside a building or other structure. A swarm of bees is generally very docile and not a threat.

In general, beekeepers view residential swarm retrieval as community service and do not charge a fee. When beekeepers indicate that they do charge a fee, they are listed on the Swarm Call (with Fee) List under Classified Ads. Take care to ask your swarm collector ahead of time about their policies.

Be prepared to provide the following information:

    • Are the insects definitely honey bees?
      • If you’re not sure, take a photo and/or be able to describe them in detail.
    • How high up are they?
    • What are they hanging from?
    • Are they easily accessible?
    • How large is the swarm?
    • How long have they been there?

If the bees are inside a structure, you will need to call someone skilled in Bee Cut Outs or Bee Removal. This kind of work generally entails a cost.  See the Bee Removal List or orsba.org/classifieds.  It is ideal if the person removing bees from inside of a structure is insured.
